Bruce Annan, 46, is Executive Vice-President for International Alliances, Bell Globemedia, Toronto, Canada.
Bell Globemedia is Canada's premier multi-media company. It owns The Globe and Mail, Canada's National Newspaper; CTV, Canada's leading private broadcaster; and Sympatico-Lycos, the number-one Canadian Internet portal. Headquartered in Toronto, Bell Globemedia is owned by BCE Inc. (70.1%), The Thomson Corporation (20%), and The Woodbridge Company Limited (9.9%).
Until June 2001, Mr. Annan was president of electronic media for Torstar Media Group, Toronto. TMG includes Canada’s largest newspaper, The Toronto Star, and four other daily newspapers; 70 community newspapers; more than 40 websites and Toronto Star Television. During his tenure, Torstar achieved two unprecedented equity partnerships: with BCE in Toronto.com, and with Globe Interactive in Workopolis.com.
Mr. Annan was the founding publisher of Toronto.com, launching the online guide as part of the CitySearch network in 1997. Previously, he was vice-president and regional publisher with Torstar’s Metroland community newspaper group. He began his career as a 16-year-old copyboy at The Edmonton Journal, and worked as a reporter, sportswriter and editor before moving into senior management.
He is a former director of the Internet Advertising Bureau of Canada and Internet columnist for the International Newspaper Marketing Association magazine, Ideas.
