[Workshops Overview]
[Master Series] [Get-It-Done] [Know-how Panels]

The Master Series were created last year to make sure a group maximum of 40 people receive direct access to key people from the industry who through their work deserved the title "Master".
The topics this year include the ongoing project of creating a multimedia writing tradition, the content area "sports" and a no- nonsense approach to creating subscription-based content success.

Writing for Multimedia

Jonathan Halls says the best new-media writers are led by values rather than rules. In this workshop he'll explore three values essential for good media writing and examine the unique characteristics of the web medium. Building on these values and drawing on your understanding of the web medium he'll show you show how this knowledge should influence your web writing practice. He'll also help you think about developing your own "value-based" guides to better focus your content on your audience. Offering practical tips for better web-writing, this will be an interactive workshop where you're encouraged to share your experiences about your web site.

Abstract:
Jonathan Halls says the best new-media writers are led by values rather than rules.

In this workshop he'll explore three values essential for good media writing and examine the unique characteristics of the web medium. The three values are audience, purpose and strategy.

Building on these values and drawing on participants' understanding of the web medium and its attributes, he'll show you show how this knowledge should influence web writing practice.

He'll also help you think about developing your own "value-based" guides to better focus your content on your audience and suggest ways to critique some of the emerging "rules" of web writing.

Offering practical tips for better web-writing, this workshop will be presented in an interactive style and participants will be encouraged to share their experiences in web writing and discuss their own web sites.

Resources: A Google search reveals the high popularity of the topic. For historically minded people this chronology is quite fascinating. Recall for example with Al Johnson that there was a defining moment when film started to have sound.

Accidental Publishers: Doing it right
Learn how to design and manage a website using publishing best practice

When Steve Case, chairman of AOL Time Warner, said that on the Internet every enterprise becomes a publisher, he wasn't joking. Many organizations are only now realizing that running a website is in fact a lot like running a publication. Publishing is about getting the right content to the right person at the right time, at the right cost and the right profit! Learn from Gerry McGovern, who's company newsletter and site "NUA internet surveys" achieved worldwide recognition. Gerry is also an author of two books on content management: Content Critical and The Web Content Style Guide (Financial Times Prentice Hall).
